Unrequited love is a one-sided affection which is not reciprocated. It can be extremely painful to have a strong devotion to someone when you know those feelings will never be returned. Human emotions are very complex. We usually have little control over them and can find people desirable for many reasons such as physical beauty, charm, intelligence, wit and status. Although unrequited love is often a romantic theme in poetry, literature, music and movies, it can have a dark side.

The inability of the unrequited lover to express and fulfill emotional needs may lead to feelings of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. The recipient of this unwanted love may also suffer from feelings of frustration and guilt or may unscrupulously use the circumstances to their own advantage. In any case, it's a hopeless situation for the unrequited lover where the person they want the most is usually the person they're best off doing without.
