Empty Promises

Recorded in May 1971 at the Newcastle Mayfair Ballroom with Rod Stewart and the Faces. What a night! Rod Stewart was just really starting to take off now as a solo performer and in fact they were still being billed as the Faces (formerly the Small Faces). We've worked with some amazing people over the years and we were there at the beginning of their careers. Not even they could have imagined that they would achieve such superstar status and still be as popular after all this time.

Empty Promises was written as a sort of protest song against greed and corruption in the world. Although it's over fifty years old, it still has relevance today. Seems like nothing changes.

There's trouble in Boomtown

Things are not going well

There's a stranger

In Paradise

And he's making it Hell

Doesn't dance to the music

Doesn't join in the sin

He just waits outside the city gates

But he never comes in

We don't know where he comes from

We don't know who he is

But he laughs at the people

Their red blood

Their blue eyes

Their black hearts

And their empty promises

There's a rumour in Boomtown

Yes, I've heard people talk

They say there's gonna be

An eclipse of the sun

Yes, it's gonna get dark

And then there's the stranger

That we don't understand

He goes down to the riverside

And he washes his hands

We don't know where he comes from

We don't know who he is

But he laughs at the people

Their red blood

Their blue eyes

Their black hearts

And their empty promises

Things are different in Boomtown

Seemed to change overnight

Seems as soon as the city grew dark

Everyone saw the light.

There's no sign of the stranger

It's like he didn't exist

And though he'll not be forgotten

I know he'll never be missed

We don't know where he comes from

We don't know who he is

But he laughs at the people

Their red blood

Their blue eyes

Their black hearts

And their empty promises

The world doesn't need any more
